Chiltern International Fire has published on its website a helpful ‘European reaction to fire classification document checklist’ which explains how the document may be interpreted and used.
As Senior Technical Officer Dawn Simpkins stressed, ‘A classification document verifies that a product has demonstrated a certain level of performance when tested to European reaction to fire tests. Classifications are used and accepted throughout Europe and in other countries, for instance in the Far East, on a case by case basis. However, it is important to understand that it comes with conditions on manufacture and use of the product.’
A classification document may be requested by the following key groups:
- Product manufacturers - to demonstrate that the product has achieved the required level of performance.
- Manufacturers - to demonstrate enhanced performance over competing products in the market place.
- Purchasers - to satisfy themselves that the product meets their requirements. The manufacturer must provide this document if asked.
Mrs Simpkins added, ‘The checklist will be equally useful for Building Control, for anyone buying a product who needs to know its classification, and anyone who has a product with a classification and wants to understand more.’
