Chiltern International Fire (CIF) has welcomed publication of BS EN 1366-3 2009 Fire resistance tests for service installations. Penetration seals which together with the supporting European Technical Approval Guidelines (ETAG) No.26 Part 2 means that there is ‘no technical reason not to move ahead with CE marking of products’, according to CIF Head of Section: Fire Resistance Mark Cummings.
He added, ‘The new standard is more prescriptive than before, which is good for manufacturers. Within days of it being published, we had requests for testing from companies who have been champing at the bit to get the CE marking process under way.’
If, as industry sources suggest, the European Commission intends to make the Construction Products Directive a Regulation by 2011, then CE marking of penetration seals will be mandatory for sales in the UK.
And Mr Cummings warned, ‘Testing to BS EN 1366–3 has the potential to be a lengthy process. It’s not complicated, just detailed, and in some ways the new standard has created a few more hurdles for the laboratories. This shouldn’t make the process more difficult for clients, but the earlier they sit down with laboratory experts; the shorter the delay will be before they can put their newly CE-marked product on the market.’
Chiltern International Fire will undertake its first penetration seal testing to the new standard in April. Its sister company BM TRADA Certification is a Notified Body for CE marking.
