Chiltern Dynamics has further enhanced its test credentials by gaining UKAS accreditation for airborne and impact sound insulation testing of buildings.
Acoustic testing has been mandatory in England & Wales since 2003, under Approved Document E (ADE). It requires new buildings and buildings formed by a material change of use to achieve a reasonable level of sound insulation between dwellings.
There are two ways of complying: either to build to Robust Details, or to conduct on site pre-completion sound insulation tests. Chiltern Dynamics Operations Manager Tom Gregory said, ‘There is a level of apprehension about acoustic testing on site, but if the design specification is followed, and a good standard of workmanship is maintained, there is very little chance of failure. Robust Details are equally strict. If developers deviate from the specification, or if workmanship is poor, then on site testing may have to be conducted anyway.’
Chiltern Dynamics is now able to meet ADE recommendations that testing bodies should be third-party accredited, ideally through UKAS. Mr Gregory added, ‘Chiltern Dynamics has been UKAS-accredited to offer air tightness testing for some time. There are clear links between good sound insulation and air tightness performance and by being to able to test for both, we can offer clients an effective, value for money service. We want to assist clients in achieving successful results, so provide pre-test support to identify any weak points and offer guidance on improvements.’
The company has also produced a new Technical Information Sheet TI – 0912 Acoustic Testing – Achieving Compliance, which covers test procedures and requirements and looks at different types of construction, highlighting where the weak points may be in terms of sound insulation.
