Chiltern Dynamics devises security test for bi-fold doors

Untitled document

Chiltern Dynamics has produced a test methodology for evaluating bi-folding doorsets for their security performance, at the request of manufacturers whose products are gaining in popularity.

Secured by Design, too, has tacitly approved the test methodology in principle, if it is supported by a third-party certification scheme. Chiltern Dynamics is in discussion with manufacturers to agree a pilot test and with sister company BM TRADA Certification to extend the scope of the Q-Mark scheme for enhanced security doorsets to include bi-fold doors. Third-party certification such as Q-Mark is of course, essential for SBD approval.

Mr Andrews is confident that once sufficient testing has been carried out, Chiltern Dynamics will be able to target UKAS accreditation for the methodology, which interprets PAS 24 requirements, referencing aspects of testing double leaf doorsets for security.  ‘We went through a similar process for horizontally sliding doors and, having gained UKAS accreditation, our test methodology has been adopted by the relevant test bodies.’

Manufacturers are reporting growing interest in bi-fold products and associated hardware and demand is expected to continue throughout 2010 - bi-fold doors offer space-saving, easy access and let in light, but they have not been regarded as a secure product because of their design. Mr Andrews added, ‘Our test method, drawing on various published test standards for doors and windows, will enable suitably robust products that successfully complete the testing to gain market recognition as secure products.’
