BM TRADA Certification has developed a new Q-Mark Scheme to BS EN 12608: 2003 Unplasticized polyvinylchloride (PVC-U) profiles for the fabrication of windows and doors. Classification, requirements and test methods. This third-party product certification scheme for PVC-U profiles is based on recognised quality assurance standards (eg ISO 9001:2008) and confirms compliance to British and/or European test and product standards referenced within BS EN 12608.
The Q-Mark scheme goes further, however. It will cover factory production control, documentation and test/assessment evidence. The resultant certification is specific to clearly defined profiles and formulations.
The scheme will therefore enable manufacturers:
- To provide unambiguous evidence of compliance with the standards.
- To verify the performance categories of their profiles
- To provide the required quality of PVC-U profiles, a pre-requisite for window and door manufacturers if further certification is required.
As Senior Technical Consultant Andy Sumner explained, ‘It is a requirement of BS 7412 and PAS 23/24 that all PVC-U profiles used in window and door manufacture should conform to BS EN 12608. This ensures that the profiles are extruded to a defined quality and consistency, covering aesthetic appearance, dimensions, colour, strength and welding.
Significantly, the new Q-Mark scheme for PVC-U profiles is the first step for window and door fabricators using the profiles covered to consider applying for Q-Mark themselves, for the manufacture of products within the scope of this certification and in accordance with Secured by Design requirements (SBD). Mr Sumner added, ‘Above all the Q-Mark will enable specifiers, regulators and inspection authorities to identify certified products which comply with all the relevant standards.’
