Chiltern Dynamics questions costly IGU consultancy

EN 1279 testing at Chiltern DynamicsChiltern Dynamics has launched its ‘EN 1279 Compliance Package’ to clarify what IGU manufactures must do to CE mark their products under EN 1279 ‘Glass in buildings – insulating glass units’, which was posted in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJ) last month.

The company is concerned that in extreme cases manufacturers could end up paying almost double what they need to in terms of test, consultancy and implementation fees to CE mark their products.

Jon Osborn, General Manager, has written to clients ‘ in an attempt to bring clarity to a situation where others may have failed. We had concerns that the pressure of having to comply with regulatory requirements would force manufacturers spending money unnecessarily. We felt that it was time to stand up and support IGU manufacturers in the UK. The package we have put together is exactly that, a support package. Yes, we are of course in business to make money, but we also want to develop long term relationships with clients, not opportunistic short-term profits.’

Chiltern Dynamics is offering a comprehensive package at a cost-effective rate of £2,850 plus VAT. This encompasses:

  • Guide to implementing factory production control (FPC) system
  • A full EN 1279 initial type test at an accredited UK laboratory, with a full test report
  • Post-test support, if problems arise
  • UV testing, as required
  • The first two EN 1279 Part 6 audit tests

One particular area of confusion, Jon added, is the implementation of FPC. ‘The Construction Products Directive was not implemented to allow consultants to make money out of manufacturers by telling them how to comply. To this end, our Implementation Guide is designed to let you do it yourself and save money. It is written by a specialist in the implementation of quality management and FPC systems and designed to be straightforward. It is free to our clients because we do not believe you should have to pay for the information on how to comply and then pay again to show you comply.’

The guide is a loose-leaf manual, backed by an electronic copy on CD-ROM.

Manufacturers who are not clients may purchase the guide alone for £25 + VAT. ‘This simply helps us cover the production costs for what is a very professional publication.’
