We offer a suite of UKAS accredited reaction to fire tests together with classification of reaction to fire performance to BS EN 13501-1. It is also possible for us to devise bespoke test programmes to meet the needs of particular projects or products and to support research and development.

Reaction to fire is the measurement of how a material or system will contribute to the fire development and spread, particularly in the very early stages of a fire when evacuation is crucial.

The tests are smaller in scale than for fire resistance and are carried out on specific components or materials representative of end-use application. The test specimens are representative of items that may be exposed to a growing fire including:

  • wall linings
  • ceiling linings
  • external wall surfaces

A process of European harmonisation is in progress throughout europe in support of the Construction Products Directive (CPD) that aims to reduce barriers to trade throughout the EU by ensuring that products placed on the market in any member state have been classified consistently.

European reaction to fire tests, include the following:

  • BS EN ISO 1182     Non-combustibility testing
  • BS EN 13823          Single burning item
  • BS EN ISO 1716     Calorific potential test
  • BS EN 11925-2      Small flame ignitability

Over the next few years, European standards may supersede National standards.
