BM TRADA Certification (sister company to Chiltern Fire & Dynamics) operates third party certification Q-Mark schemes for building products - especially doors, windows and glass:

Product certification is the ultimate endorsement of product performance.

Products will always be made to achieve a particular performance – whether it be to a British, European or International test standard, or simply to the manufacturer’s own in-house specification – and the manufacturer will sell his product on the basis of compliance to that specification.

But often specifiers want greater confidence in a product than a manufacturer’s own declaration. They want evidence from a reliable independent source to confirm that the product:

has been properly tested and appraised
is manufactured to a consistent high standard

Only products, which clearly bear a certification body’s mark, can demonstrate that they have been independently checked in this way. A statement by a manufacturer that a product is made to a given standard is simply that - a manufacturer’s declaration - and confers no independent verification.
