Project Description
This project was undertaken to provide data to be used when evaluating in cell fire suppression systems. To achieve this a testing facility was established in which to carry out third party investigative works.
The main aims of these investigations were to measure the levels of heat and toxic gases produced and define tenable levels at which prison personnel can safely undertake cell rescue without the use of self contained, short duration breathing apparatus. The investigations also assessed the property damage and potential harm caused by the fire to the cell occupant.
A double prison cell module was supplied fitted out with windows, lights and all other internal fittings such as bed frame and basin etc. Also supplied were materials for use in creating a realistic design fire load. Adding an association area based on actual dimensions completed the test facility.
In cell fire suppression systems were tested to give third party approval showing that the systems performed in an acceptable way and did not produce unacceptable levels of toxic gases that would endanger life.
Chiltern International Fire’s Involvement
The suppression systems tested were installed by third parties. Beyond that Chiltern International Fire Ltd (CIF) were responsible for designing and performing all aspects of the tests and analysis of the results gained.
