PS5: Reaction to Fire test facility

Single Burning Item testing at Chiltern International Fire
Small Flame Ignitability testing at Chiltern International Fire

Untitled document

Project Description
Reaction to fire performance relates to the combustibility and ignitability of a material rather than it’s ability to resist the passage of fire through the material or structure (fire resistance).

The scope of this project was to build and commission Reaction to Fire facilities to undertake testing to European test standards BS EN ISO 11925-2:2002 (SFI) and BS EN 13823:2002 (SBI). The intent being that with the completion of these facilities Chiltern International Fire (CIF) would obtain UKAS accreditation to both perform the tests and classify products in terms of their reaction to fire performance to BS EN 13501-1:2007.

Chiltern International Fire’s Involvement
The whole project was managed by CIF with technical input from Dark Star who supplied the SBI framework, gas analysis hardware and data acquisition system. To meet UKAS requirements a large number of system and equipment calibrations were performed. Detailed procedures for both calibration and running of the test rigs were produced.

The facilities are now fully UKAS accredited and are running commercial tests.
